A 40-year three-time Emmy award winning TV producer / director / executive…music journalist…lead singer in a number of rock cover bands…father of two amazing kids: yeah, that about sums up who I am at my core.
I live my life with undeniable and endless passion and a ‘carpe diem’ sense of the world and the people in it. Born in Wilton Connecticut, I was raised by two incredibly loving, caring, fun and intelligent parents (with foibles like everyone), an architect and an actress, who bestowed on me my creative foundation and love and respect for people and things. Got my Bachelor’s in broadcast journalism from Boston University and after considering being in front of the camera, decided to largely be behind the scenes as a creative force. Over these last almost four decades, I have been a three-time Emmy winning writer/producer/director and have also served as VP of marketing for two of the country’s most successful TV stations, just an incredible run in the industry.
In 2006, I began an unexpected singing career that has surpassed all possible expectations. If you have a band that you’d like me to write about, or want to book one of my bands, or have some TV or voice work that a seasoned pro can handle on a dime, please drop me a line at shhouk7@gmail.com.
Then in 2020, I began hosting Living On Music With Steve Houk on The Zebra Press’ Z-TV Network. It was a hastily begun new music interview program, but it became MUCH more than that as the pandemic began to affect musicians so deeply. Over the last 4 years, Living On Music has proven to be a revered, bonafide and highly appreciated way for musicians and music-related people of all genres to engage with host Houk and the public through powerful conversation that is not only about reflecting on their past but talking about their present and looking towards their future. Almost all of Houk’s now over 300 guests have deeply thanked the host for giving them joy, reminiscense and hope. Many also played “live” music on the show, and playing live music at a time when in-person gigs were stifled was a godsend to all. Whether it’s the Washington DC area’s most respected and revered musical personalities, or it’s some of the top musicians from around the globe, everyone who either appears on the Z-TV series Living On Music or watches an episode comes away with a very memorable and positive experience. No matter what happens in life, we all need to be…Living On Music.
